"Avenging Victorio: A Novel of the Apache Insurgency in New Mexico, 1881" by Dave DeWitt (Rio Grande Books, $24.95, 258 pages, 16 photographs). In fall 1880, Mexican troops killed the great Apache leader Victorio in the mountains of northern Chihuahua. DeWitt's novel is about the vengeance inflicted on parts of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico in the summer of 1881 by 30 to 40 Apache warriors led by the elderly chief, Nana.
DeWitt is a New Mexican authority on chile and the author of books such as "The Fiery Cuisines" and "The Whole Chile Pepper Book."
